Organic household waste is food and garden waste. It is the main cause of methane emissions, a powerful greenhouse gas, from landfill sites. Instead of binning it, try composting. When it breaks down in a well aerated compost pile it generates CO2 , but if it is squashed up in a landfill or in an un-turned compost pile it starts to rot without air and this leads to the generation of CH4 / methane, which is 3 times more power fuels a green house gas than CO2. It's an easy, satisfying process; not only will your dustbin be less smelly, but you'll be improving your local environment and even saving money in the process. If you don't have a garden to compost in, some local authorities have set up community composting sites.
